A Neoclassical façade designed by Helmle and Huberty and constructed in 1908, the terra cotta on this building was found to be flaking (delaminating) like pastry at an uncharacteristically fast rate. It was discovered that terra cotta veneer units replaced original units. Veneers are typically 1 inch thick where standard terra cotta units are 4 inches thick. Damage from water infiltration and freeze-thaw cycles of weather sped up with deterioration. BCA designed a restoration to address these issues and return the boathouse to its original splendor.
